West Mansions on Poole Road in Westbourne has been the subject of a lot of speculation and rumour on social media. A number of constituents have contacted me to say that they have heard authoritatively that the building behind me is going to be used to house asylum seekers.
I've pushed the Home Office to find out if there's any truth to that.
They've confirmed they're not using any of their supplier companies here for that purpose.
I also pushed BCP Council, who were equally not aware of any plans. They have since sent a planning enforcement officer to visit and meet the freeholder of West Mansions.
I can confirm that the refurbishment of the building hasn't changed the interior footprint, and that the building is not being let or sublet to any asylum seekers.
I hope that will reassure people in Westbourne and in the wider community. I will continue my push to get those those town centre hotels that are still being used to house asylum seekers brought back to their original use - hosting tourists and conference visitors and so on. However, I am pleased that we now lay the West Mansions rumours to bed once and for all.
